HVS have been supplying printer consumables including ink cartridges since 1990 - virtually the beginning of ink jet technology! We have followed the progress of printing technology closely and we hold large stocks of cartridges from most manufacturers. We only list the most common on this website. For 19 years we have recommended the compatible ink cartridges that we supply.

Putting the Ink on the paper

Each manufacturer uses a similar but different system to get the ink onto the paper. Basically there are two parts: the ink supply and the print head. Epson uses a print head which is part of the machine and should last for the life of the printer.

The ink cartridge is just a container of ink - nothing more. The micro chip on the front of newer cartridges tells the printer that the cartridge is the right one, original Epson or is generic and if it contains ink. It does no more than this. Air in the system causing ink to oxidise in the print head is the biggest cause of problems.

Canon uses a similar system but the print head is a consumable item which needs to be replaced at set intervals. The lack of replacement is more often than not the cause of print problems.

There are high quality third party generic ink cartridges available for these printers and it is possible to re-fill the cartridges from these printers, if you use the correct ink - but why bother when quality low cost third party replacements are readily available?

Hewlett Packard integrates the print head and ink supply into one replacement unit. This ensures a new print head each time whether you need it or not. There are so many patents on this system, it's not possible to legally produce and sell a generic cartridge (at least not in the UK, Europe & USA).

However these cartridges can be successfully cleaned and re-filled with the correct ink and will carry on printing until the print head begins to deteriorate. This is what get when 'compatible' HP/Lexmark and some other  cartridges are offered for sale.

All other manufacturers use a system similar to one of those above.

Some manufacturers 'give away' their printers at or below cost price in the knowledge that the profit they make on the set of replacement cartridges you will shortly need will be so great they easily recover their cost! Thinking of buying a new printer and want low cost quality printing - talk to us first.
